CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. - Southeast Missouri shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half as the Redhawks snapped a nine-game losing streak against Eastern Illinois beating the Panthers 66-49 on Saturday afternoon at the Show Me Center.
EIU fell to 8-11 overall, 3-5 in the OVC. The Panthers will play at UT Martin on Monday night at 7 p.m. SEMO improved to 6-13, 2-4 in the OVC.
EIU opened the game with a 9-2 run and led 11-4 after SEMO made just one of its first twelve shots.
Sabina Oroszova had four early points for the Panthers as she led EIU with 12 points.
SEMO took its first lead of the game at 12-11 on a 3-pointer by Allyson Bradshaw.
Morgan Palombizio's jumper at 6:19 put the Panthers back in front at 16-14 in what would be the final EIU lead of the game.
Jordan Hunter drained a 3-pointer on the next Redhawks drive followed by a Kara Wright three point play on the next possession.
Katlyn Payne's 3-pointer tied the game with 30 seconds left before Hunter gave SEMO the halftime lead 24-22 with a lay-up with six seconds left to play in the half. Hunter led all players with 22 points adding nine rebounds and eight assists.
Patricia Mack opened the second half with a 3-pointer and Hunter added a jumper as SEMO extended its lead to seven points. Mack would hit three 3-pointers in the second half as SEMO made 6-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half.
The Panthers used a 7-0 run of their own to close the lead to 34-32 with 14:26 to play on a jumper by Oroszova. Hunter's 3-pointer with 9:44 to play gave SEMO its first double digit lead of the game at 48-37.
EIU closed to within seven points on free throws by
Taryn Olson and Oroszova at 8:02. Bradshaw countered with a 3-pointer for SEMO as she finished with 13 points. The Panthers would only get the lead back to single digits one time in the final eight minutes.
Olson and
Jordyne Crunk each had nine points for EIU as the Panthers shot 29 percent for the game. Payne had a team high eight rebounds with six on the offensive glass.
SEMO shot 41 percent for the game after hitting 15-of-26 from the floor in the second half for 58 percent.
