GAME 27Eastern Illinois will host UT Martin on Thursday night on American Sports Network in the first of two straight televised games from Lantz Arena. Â EIU hosts Southeast Missouri on Sunday night at 5:30 p.m. Â Both EIU and UTM have locked up spots in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tournament field and are now playing for a chance to get a bye to the Thursday night round. Â EIU lost on Saturday night at SIU Edwardsville falling to 15-11 overall, 8-5 in the OVC. Â UT Martin won at Austin Peay on Saturday night improving to 16-9 overall, 8-4 in the OVC. Â The Skyhawks won the first meeting this season in Martin, 81-51, shooting 61 percent in the win.Â
ANDERSON NAMED OVER NEWCOMER OF THE WEEKJunior
Trae Anderson was named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week following his performance in the Panthers two games last week at Austin Peay and SIU Edwardsville. Â Anderson averaged 15 points per game while shooting 61 percent from the field. Â Anderson has now scored in double figures 16 times this season with a high of 25 points at Southeast Missouri on Feb. 7. Â He has increased his scoring to 16 points per game in OVC play connecting for 54.9 percent shooting.
JOHNSTON SETS EIU FRESHMAN RECORDGuard
Cornell Johnston set the Eastern Illinois freshman record for assists on Saturday night at SIU Edwardsville. Â Johnston now has 116 assists this season passing the record held by Mike Robinson (115 in 2006). Â Johnston is third in the OVC at 4.5 assists per game. Â He needs ten assists to break into the EIU single season top ten. Â In addition to leading the Panthers in assists, Johnston leads the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage knocking down 39-of-79 for 49.4 percent.Â
