GAME 33Eastern Illinois advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament with a 97-91 win at Oakland on Tuesday night. Â EIU knocked down 15 3-pointers which tied for the second most in a game in school history. Â It was the first time EIU had scored 97 or more points since an overtime win against Tennessee Tech in January 2010. Â EIU is now 18-14 overall. Â The Panthers will host Evansville which picked up a 82-77 win over IPFW on Wednesday. Â The Purple Aces are now 20-12 overall. Â The OVC was 3-0 in the first round of the CIT.Â
EIU POSTS WINNING SEASONEastern Illinois clinched its second winning season since 2001 on Feb. 22 with a win over Southeast Missouri. Â EIU finished the regular season 9-7 in the OVC having locked up the Panthers sixth winning conference record as an OVC member. Â EIU won its 18th game of the season in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Â The 18 wins rank as the fifth most in a season at the NCAA Division I level. Â EIU's school record for NCAA Division I wins is 21 in 2001.
EIU IN POSTSEASON PLAYEastern Illinois is playing in its third NCAA Division I postseason tournament in school history and first since 2001. Â EIU previously advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1992 and 2001. Â EIU won its first NCAA Division I postseason game on March 17 with a win at Oakland. Â Prior to that the Panthers last NCAA Tournament win came as a NCAA Division II member with a 74-63 win over Wright State in the 1980 NCAA Regional. Â EIU made six NCAA Division II Tournament appearances between 1974-80 finishing third in the nation in 1976 and 1978. Â Prior to that EIU played as a member of the NAIA advancing to 12 NAIA postseason tournaments including a fourth in the nation finish in 1957.
