CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – For the second week in a row Eastern Illinois baseball schedule was moved around due to snow. This week the Panthers moved their Ohio Valley Conference opening series to Austin Peay with the Governors winning the first two games of the series on Sunday, 11-5 and 6-3.
EIU fell to 0-8, 0-2 in the OVC. APSU improved to 7-4, 2-0 in the OVC. The two schools will close out the series on Monday at 1 p.m.
"We just didn't come up with a big hit today," said EIU head coach
Jim Schmitz. "We gave them some easy runs which makes it harder for us to come back offensively."
GAME ONE RECAPAustin Peay scored three runs in the second and added two more in the third as the Governors picked up an 11-5 win in the opener on Sunday.
Cayce Bredlau scored the game's first run as he came home in the top of the first for APSU on an infield ground out. APSU played as the visitor due to this being EIU's OVC series despite the fact the games were played on the Governors home field.
EIU took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the first as
Demetre Taylor plated
Caleb Howell with a triple. Taylor would come home on a single by
Isaac Sampen as the transfer was 2-for-4 in the game.
APSU scored three runs in the top of the second against EIU starter
Matt Wivinis (0-2). Chase Hamilton had a two-run home run to give the Governors the lead. They added an unearned run to lead 4-2. Wivinis worked five innings for the Panthers on the mound.
Austin Peay starter and designated hitter Alex Robles drove home two runs in the top of the third to help his cause with a double down the right field line. Robles would only work 4.1 innings as Levi Primasing (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen.
EIU closed the gap in the fourth as
Brant Valach connected for a two-run home run. Valach was 2-for-4 with three RBI. He had a solo home run to lead off the eighth. APSU added insurance runs in the eighth with two home runs. Patrick Massoni was 5-for-5 at the plate in the opener.
GAME TWO RECAPIn the second game Austin Peay took advantage of two wild pitches in the middle of the game to sweep the series opening doubleheader with a 6-3 win in the night cap.
APSU jumped on the board in the first inning as Robles drove home one run after Massoni scored on a throwing error in the infield.
EIU took advantage of a Governors error in their half of the first as
Caleb Howell scored on a throwing error following an infield hit by
Mitch Gasbarro.
Clayton Smithson extended the Governors lead to 3-1 in the top of the second with a solo home run.
The Panthers would come back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame as
John Devito hit a solo home run and Howell drove home a run with an RBI double down the left field line. Howell was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Austin Peay was able to break the tie in the third inning scoring a run on a wild pitch by starter
Garrison Stenger (0-3). Another wild pitch in the fourth gave APSU a two run advantage. That would be all Austin Peay starter Caleb Powell (3-0) would need for the win.
Austin Peay tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with a Massoni RBI single. Robles and Garrett Copeland both finished the game 2-of-4 for the Governors. Kacy Kemmer pitched the ninth to pick up his first save.
Valach added a hit in the night cap as EIU had six hits against three APSU pitchers.
