Baseball Loses High Scoring Game

Panthers fall in series finale at Morehead State, 20-14

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State blew open a high scoring game on Sunday afternoon scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Eagles beat Eastern Illinois, 20-14, to win the weekend Ohio Valley Conference series.

EIU is now 11-31, 7-17 in the OVC.  The Panthers will host UT Martin next weekend for the final home series of the season.  Morehead State is now 30-18, 15-9 in the OVC.

The Panthers opened up a 7-0 lead with two runs in the first and five runs in the second.  Demetre Taylor had a two-run double in the first inning.  Mitch Gasbarro opened the second inning with a solo home run.  Joseph Duncan and Caleb Howell both had RBI singles in the inning.

Morehead State chipped away at EIU's lead with four runs in the bottom of the second.  Ryan Kent had a three-run homer in the inning.

EIU responded with two runs in the top of the third. Howell drove home one of the runs as he finished 3-of-5 raising his season batting average to .396.

The Eagles tied the game at 9-9 with five runs in the bottom of the third. Kent had a two-run double as he was 3-for-5 with five RBI.  Kane Sweeney, who finished with six RBI, drove home one run with a sacrifice fly. 

EIU regained the lead the in the fourth with a Hunter Morris RBI double.  The Panthers pushed the lead to four with three runs in the fifth.  Adam Casson had one RBI while EIU scored the other two runs on a MSU error.

Cable Wright (3-1) had the win in relief for Morehead State.  Andrew Grahn (2-2) suffered the loss in defeat. 

Sweeney began the big Morehead State inning with a lead-off homer.  He would bat again in the fifth hitting a grand slam.  Chris Robinson was 4-for-6 in the game hitting an RBI double and two-run homer in the fifth.  Nick Newell had a two-run homer to cap the inning for the Eagles.

Braxton Morris and Brandon Rawe each had three hits for MSU.

Brant Valach and Morris had three hits for EIU as the two squads combined for 40 hits.
