Box Score

DEKALB, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois men's soccer team killed two birds with one stone Tuesday evening snapping their seven-match losing streak with a 1-0 win at Northern Illinois. Tuesday night's win marks the first road victory for the Panthers this season.

With the win EIU improves to 3-9-1 and remains 0-3-0 in conference play while NIU falls to 1-6-4 overall.

Starting goalkeeper Mike Novotny recorded his second shut out of the season while earning a new season high with six saves after previously setting his record in the Panthers last match against Omaha.

Sophomore Brendan McDonough was the hero of the match scoring his first goal of the season to give EIU the victory while leading the team with two shots, both on goal.

It was an evenly matched first half for both squads as EIU and NIU fought to a 0-0 draw at the end of the first period. Both teams recorded four shots throughout the opening period with Kris Luke, Trevor Kerns, and Alex Castaneda all earning shots on goal.

EIU wouldn't break through until the 71st minute of the second period as the Huskies lost the ball in their own defensive third. Julian Montoya sent a cross into the box to find McDonough who finished the play to put EIU up 1-0.

Montoya's assist gives him two on the season so far.

The Panthers fought hard defensively to keep NIU from scoring the rest of the match as five of Novotny's six total saves all came in the second half.

Castaneda finished the match with two shots, one on target while Christian Sosnowski recorded two shots of his own. Davis Wegmann also earned a shot in the match.

EIU has some time off now before they close out their four-match road trip with their last non-conference match of the season at Cincinnati Wednesday (Oct. 19).
