AMES, Iowa - Eastern Illinois softball sweeps day two of the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational with wins over North Dakota and IUPUI. The Panthers earned a 1-0 walk-off victory over North Dakota in the first game of the day followed by a close 6-5 win over IUPUI in the second game of their doubleheader. With the two wins EIU improves to 3-1 on the season.

Jessica Wireman highlighted day two of the tournament for EIU earning her second complete game shutout over North Dakota followed by the 3.2 inning win against IUPUI. Wireman finished the day with 15 strikeouts, 8 hits, and 2 earned runs.

Wireman was once again called upon to start for the Panthers in the opening game against North Dakota. This game was only the second time EIU has ever faced UND.

Wireman was relied upon heavily in a very defensive game as neither team could get anything going throughout most of the game. North Dakota threatened to score in the top of the sixth inning as both teams were locked in a 0-0 stalemate.

UND managed to get in scoring position with runners on second and third base with only one out. Wireman struck out the next two batters to close out the inning and keep the game deadlocked at zero.

The Panthers finally managed to get some offense going in the bottom of the seventh inning with the game still tied 0-0. April Markowski started the inning with a walk, eventually advancing to second on a wild pitch. After back-to-back outs for EIU the game looked to go into extra innings, until Markowski stole third base and Kylie Bennett was walked to put runners on the corners with two outs.

Katie Watson played the hero as she drilled a single through the right side to bring Markowski around to score and give EIU the 1-0 walk-off victory over North Dakota.

Wireman finished the game pitching her second complete game shutout of the tournament with eight strikeouts, three hits, and zero earned runs.

Michelle Rogers earned the start on the mound for EIU in the Panthers second game of the day against IUPUI. It was a battle for Rogers at the start as the Jaguars loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with only one out. Rogers managed to make it out of the inning unscathed recording a strikeout to end the inning and keep the score tied 0-0.

EIU struck first in the bottom of the first as Kayla Bear reached on an infield single. Bear successfully stole second only to round home plate shortly afterward as Bennett sent one into the left center bleachers to put the Panthers up 2-0.

The Panthers extended their lead in the second inning as EIU loaded the bases early with only one out. IUPUI's Kaitlynn Moody walked Markowski bringing Taylor Monahan home to put EIU up 3-0. Ashlynn Paul crossed home plate later in the inning as Jennifer Ames reached first on a fielder's choice to make it 4-0 in favor of EIU.

The Jaguars pulled the game close in the top of the third as Taylor Chitwood hit a three-run home run to pull IUPUI within one and make it 4-3. Watson opened the bottom of the third inning with a double only to be brought home shortly afterward following a single from Mady Poulter to extend EIU's lead to 5-3.

IUPUI threatened to take control of the game in the top of the fifth as the Jaguars loaded the bases with no outs. Wireman pitched herself out of the jam striking out IUPUI's next three batters to maintain EIU's 5-3 lead.

Watson hit her second double of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning bringing Ames around to score from second base and put the Panthers up 6-3.

The Jaguars clawed back in the game in the top of the sixth as IUPUI had runners on second and third base. Maggie Good then hit a double to left field to bring around both runners and make it 6-5 with one out. The Panthers managed to make it out of the inning, and close out the game holding a one-run lead and earning the 6-5 victory.

The Panthers close out the Cyclone Invitational Sunday [Feb. 14] against Iowa State at 11:15 am.
