GAME 28Eastern Illinois lost an overtime game for the first time this season falling 87-84 on Thursday night at UT Martin. Despite the loss EIU did lock up a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the fourth straight year under head coach
Jay Spoonhour. The Panthers are now 11-16 overall, 7-7 in the OVC. EIU still has an outside shot at the OVC West Division title but would need to win out and get some help from other teams. EIU plays at Southeast Missouri and then hosts Murray State on Thursday to wrap up the regular season. SEMO fell to 5-22 overall, 2-12 in the OVC with a loss to SIU Edwardsville. SEMO is 1-6 at home in OVC play this year.
JOHNSTON WITH A DOUBLE-DOUBLECornell Johnston posted his third career double-double with 12 points and 10 assists at UT Martin on Thursday. Johnston is second in the OVC in assists with 5.6 per game and has climbed to fifth on the EIU career assists list with 308. His 152 assists this season are four shy of his freshman total and seventh on the EIU single season list. In addition Johnston ranks 13th on the EIU career 3-pointers made list with 112. He leads the OVC in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.0-to-1.
CHASING SCHOOL 3-POINT RECORDEarlier this season
Casey Teson set the EIU freshman record for 3-pointers made in a game knocking down six against Indiana State. As the season draws to a close Teson needs ten 3-pointers to tie the EIU freshman single season record for 3-pointers set by Romain Martin - 68 in 2006-07. Teson has 58 3-pointers this season which ranks seventh in the OVC in 3-pointers made per game (first among OVC freshmen). He has made at least one 3-pointer in 18 straight games.
