CARBONDALE, Ill. - Eastern Illinois softball could not pick up a win to close out the Southern Illinois Coach B Classic falling to Butler 2-1 followed by a 7-1 loss to Kansas Sunday [Mar. 6].

With the loss EIU falls to 4-15 on the season with both Jessica Wireman and Michelle Rogers recording losses on the mound.

Jennifer Ames led the Panther offense finishing the day going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

It was a very defensive battle for EIU in their first game of the day against Butler. The Bulldogs threatened in the top of the fourth inning with runners on second and third base and no outs. Wireman made it out of the inning with three straight outs including back-to-back strikeouts to close out the inning. Wireman finished the game with five strikeouts, recording six total for the day.

The Panthers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kayla Bear hit a lead-off single down the left field line. Bear went on to steal second base right before Ames ripped another single down the left field line to record the RBI and put EIU up 1-0.

Butler struck back in the top of the fifth inning with two straight singles to put runners on first and second base. The Bulldog's Kaitlin Doud then doubled to left center field to clear the bases and put Butler ahead 2-1. After walking the next batter, EIU brought in Rogers to replace Wireman on the mound.

Rogers got into a jam in the top of the sixth inning loading the bases by walking three different batters. The sophomore managed to close out the inning without any problems striking out two batters and forcing an infield pop-out.

The Panthers did their best to rally late in the game only down one run, but could not come back falling to Butler 2-1. Ames finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. The Bulldog's Kristin Gutierrez recorded the win for Butler on the mound earning six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

EIU's second game of the day started off quickly as the Panthers faced Kansas for the second time during the Coach B Classic.

Bear opened the game with a single through the left side advancing to second base off of a sacrifice bunt from Ames. Kylie Bennett continued her solid tournament play with a single to right field to score Bear and put EIU up 1-0 early.

The Jayhawks answered right back in the bottom of the first inning as Daniella Chavez hit a two-run home run to give KU the 2-1 lead.

Chavez added to the Jayhawk lead in the bottom of the third inning hitting a single to left center field to bring the runners on second and third base around to score and extend KU's lead to 4-1. Kansas put two more on the board before the inning was over as Taylor Dodson sent another two-run shot into the bleachers to make it 6-1 headed into the fourth inning.

Wireman's day was not done as she replaced Rogers in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rogers finished the day with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

Kansas nearly put the game away in the bottom of the fifth as Wireman got into a jam loading the bases following a single and back-to-back walks. Haley Brickey crossed home plate after Taylor Dodson was hit by a pitch to make the score 7-1. Wireman was able to close out the inning without allowing anymore runs, but Kansas held on to earn the 7-1 decision in seven innings.

Bear, Bennett, and Haylee Beck recorded EIU's only hits against the Jayhawks. KU's Dodson and Chavez were both a perfect 2-for-2 combining to record all seven of Kansas' RBIs.

EIU will take the field next in Indiana with a two-game series against Evansville Wednesday [Mar. 9]. First pitch for the opening game of the doubleheader against the Purple Aces is set for 3 pm.
