Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Eastern Illinois Softball split Friday's doubleheader against SIU Edwardsville winning the opening game 4-3 before the Cougars took game two 3-1. The doubleheader, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, was rescheduled to Friday due to the potential for inclement weather.

With the split EIU is now 20-25 on the season and 14-7 in the OVC while the Cougars are 22-21 and 14-8 in the conference.

Jessica Wireman improved to 14-17 earning her 19th complete game of the season and only giving up one hit in the first game while throwing five strikeouts against the Cougars.

It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning that EIU broke the 0-0 deadlock in Friday's opening game. April Markowski led-off the inning with a single to center field. Kylie Bennett advanced Markowski to second base on the next at-bat with a sacrifice bunt. Markowski then successfully stole third base before coming around to score thanks to a throwing error from SIUE's shortstop to put EIU in front 1-0.

The Panthers extended their lead in the sixth inning as Haylee Beck opened the inning with a single through the left side. Bennett brought Beck home with a two-run home run to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. The senior first baseman leads the team in home runs with seven on the season.

It was a rough bottom of the sixth for EIU as the Panthers committed three errors while throwing two wild pitches and one hit by pitch allowing SIUE to tie the game with three unearned runs.

Beck proved to be the hero in the top of the seventh inning with a game winning RBI single up the middle to drive Jennifer Ames home from second base to regain the lead 4-3. Beck finished the game 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI as the Panther defense shut down the next three batters for SIUE to close out game one.

The Cougars struck first in the late game as Alyssa Heren opened the game for SIUE with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give SIUE a 1-0 lead.

SIUE's Tess Eby extended the Cougar lead in the fourth inning with another solo home run to lead-off the inning and make it 2-0.

EIU pulled one back in the top of the fifth inning. Amber Toenyes hit a single to left field before Taylor Monahan came in to pinch run eventually stealing second base. Andrea Roberts hit a single to centerfield on the next at-bat to score Monahan and cut SIUE's lead in half 2-1.

Eby hit her second solo home run of the game in the sixth inning to earn the final score of 3-1.

Toenyes finished the game 2-for-3 to lead EIU in hitting. Both Toenyes and Beck finished the day leading the Panthers with three hits a piece.

The Panthers and Cougars will play game three of the series Saturday at 1 pm.
