CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois volleyball team completed their 2016 preseason workouts as the Panthers held their annual blue and gray inter-squad scrimmage in Lantz Arena. The gray team swept the two-set match, winning the first set by a score of 28-26 and the second at 25-20.
Today's scrimmage officially ends the team's 2016 fall camp, as second-year head coach
Samantha Wolinski and the Panthers will now look to focus on their upcoming season ahead. The Panthers will open the new season on the road at the Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Invitational next weekend (Aug. 26-27). Eastern Illinois will face the likes of Stephen F. Austin, South Dakota State, and the host, Green Bay, in the four-team invitational.
EIU will take on Stephen F. Austin in the first game of the invitational at 10 a.m. on Friday. The Panthers and Green Bay will play in the nightcap on Friday as the two teams will square off at 7 p.m. Eastern Illinois will finish tournament play at 1 p.m. on Saturday as they will face South Dakota State.
Eastern Illinois will return to home for an early-season home contest on Tuesday (Aug. 30), as the Panthers will welcome Butler to Lantz Arena at 6 p.m.
With the 2016 preseason coming to an end, Wolinski had some positive thoughts about the team's effort.
"We are excited for the start of the season and we are ready to start playing some opponents on the other side of the net," said Wolinski. "We have had a solid preseason and are ready to see some different lineups out on the court."
Wolinski ended by talking about the team's performance in the inter-squad scrimmage.
"It was good to get into a game day routine and get some of the jitters out. This gave us a chance to figure out the three to four areas we really need to focus in on this week at practice to get ready for our first tournament."
