ON-TAP: Eastern Illinois will open the weekend with a 7:30 pm match on Friday evening at Valparaiso. EIU enters the weekend 2-1-1 after splitting matches last weekend against Green Bay (W, 1-0) and Milwaukee (L, 0-2). Valpo enters the weekend with a 2-2 record. On Sunday the Panthers return home to host Chicago State. The start time for Sunday's match has been moved up to a 12 p.m. start at Lakeside Field. Chicago State is 1-3 heading into the weekend.
PANTHERS OFF TO SOLID START: Eastern Illinois women's soccer is off to a solid start this season as the Panthers picked up a win over Green Bay last Friday before suffering their first loss of the season on Sunday to Milwaukee. EIU's 2-1-1 start to the season is the best start for the program since beginning the 2009 season with a 2-1-1 record.
DeWOLF WITH ANOTHER GAME WINNER: Sophomore
Sarah DeWolf sent home the Panthers lone goal of the weekend with 61 seconds remaining on Friday afternoon to give EIU the 1-0 victory over Green Bay. It was the second goal and second game winning goal of the season for DeWolf. She has already surpassed her scoring and point total from last season when she had one goal and one assist.
EARLY SEASON OFFENSE: Eastern Illinois added its fourth goal of the season on Friday in the win over Green Bay. The Panthers have three players that have scored this season led by
Sarah DeWolf with two goals.
Pilar Barrio and
Kate Olson have both added scores. EIU currently has three players that have been credited with an assist with Barrio,
Niondina Nystrom and
Carrie Caplin all picking up assists.
TETEAK MOVES UP RECORD LIST: Sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Teteak posted her second shutout of the season on Friday against Green Bay. Teteak now has six career shutouts as she has moved into sixth on the EIU career list for shutouts. Teteak currently has a 0.71 goals against average with a total of 14 saves.
HOME MATCHES UPCOMING: On Sunday Eastern Illinois will play the first of three straight home matches at Lakeside Field as the Panthers are in a stretch of playing five of six at home. Next weekend EIU will host Fort Wayne and Western Illinois as they wrap up non-conference home action. The final non-conference match of the year is on Sept. 15 at Marian (Ind.) University.
SERIES HISTORY: Eastern Illinois and Valparaiso will be meeting for the 14th time when the two schools face each other on the pitch on Friday evening. EIU leads the all-time series 7-5-1 but Valpo has won five straight in the series. The last meeting between the schools was in 2014 with the Crusaders winning 3-1. EIU and Chicago State will be meeting for the fourth time on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers lead the all-time series 3-0 including a 2-1 win in overtime last season in Chicago.
Hannah Heinz scored the game winner last season for EIU.
HEAD COACH: Kiki Lara is in his second season as the EIU women's soccer head coach. Lara was hired as the men's soccer head coach in 2015 and was promoted to director of soccer overseeing both programs in the spring of 2016. Lara is a 2003 graduate of Incarnate Word and played in the USL First Division for five seasons. He came to EIU following a stint as the assistant men's soccer coach at Dayton.
