Charleston, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois volleyball team took on OVC opponent Jacksonville State Friday evening. The Panthers were able to sweep the Gamecocks 3-0.
With the win, EIU advances to 7-15 on the season and 2-5.
The first set started with balance play from the two teams. The teams traded points till midway through the set when Jacksonville State jumped out to a 4-0 run. EIU would respond stringing a couple of 3-0 runs together. The Panthers would jump out to a 6-0 run late in the set that would give the Panthers the lead in the set.
The second was similar to the first set with both teams trading runs early on. The Panthers would hit for their best hitting percentage in the second set at .371. The Gamecocks would keep the Panthers on their heels throughout the set keeping the score close. EIU was able to pull away once again late in the set with a 3-0 run ignited by a
Laurel Bailey kill.
The Panthers came out aggressive in the third set jumping out to an early 3-0 run. The Gamecocks would answer back with a 4-0 run ignited by a Lena Kindermann kill. Jacksonville State would attempt the comeback against the Panthers holding the lead till late in the set. The Panthers were able to jump out to a 4-0 run to snatch the lead from the Gamecocks late in the set to secure the match sweep.
Bailey finished with nine kills and three digs.
Taylor Smith finished with 14 assists, seven kills, five digs, and two blocks.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow afternoon against Tennessee Tech at 2 pm.
