CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois men's soccer fell in their final home match of the season today at Lakeside Field. Purdue Fort Wayne scored in the final three minutes of the first overtime period to secure a 2-1 win over EIU. Prior to the match, the Panthers honored the three graduating seniors
Jake Andrews,
Toby Andrews, and
Kris Luke.
EIU falls to 3-9-4 overall and 1-1-2 in the Summit League while the Mastodons improve to 10-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the Summit League.
The Mastodons scored just seven minutes into the match as Blake Cearns sent a shot into the net on a pass from Adam Gannon. Gannon's pass came from the left side of the goal box where Cearns was able to send it into the right side of the net. Cearns would finish the match with four shots.
Alex Castaneda tied the match a minute and a half later.
Jake Andrews took a shot from the right side of the box that rebounded off Purdue Fort Wayne's goalkeeper. Castaneda was there to send the ball into the goal tying the match at 1-1.
Ryan Bernt would end the match in the 97th minute scoring the game winner for the Mastodons off Romain Lopez's corner kick. Lopez finished the match with three shots for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Jake Andrews took a team leading three shots while Luke and Castaneda finished with two shots each.
Jonathan Burke made three saves in goal for the Panthers while Tor Erik Larsen made six stops for the Mastodons.
The Panthers will finished the regular season on the road next week. On Saturday Nov. 3, EIU will take on Omaha at 2 pm.
