MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Eastern Illinois softball picked up two wins on the first day of the Holy City Showdown in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The Panthers shutout Wright State 3-0 and defeated Winthrop 3-1 improving to 15-6 on the season.
Haley Mitchell and
Mady Poulter led EIU hitting .500Â through both games. Poulter also had a team-best two RBI.Â
Mitchell and
Kayla Bear both recorded home runs in EIU's 3-0 win over Wright State. Mitchell homered to center field in the first inning and Bear homered to right field in the fifth inning putting the Panthers up 2-0. Mitchell tallied EIU's final run of the game in the seventh inning off a throwing error by WSU's catcher.
Michelle Rogers pitched the complete game and recorded five strikeouts. She improved to 8-3 on the mound for the Panthers.
EIU beat Winthrop 3-1 in their second game of the day.
Jessica Wireman pitched a complete game with six strikeouts. She improved to 6-2 on the mound.
All three of EIU's runs came in the fifth inning.
Maria DeVito capitalized on a throwing error by the catcher to score the Panthers first run. Bear and Pelker scored later in the inning off a triple by Poulter to center field.Â
Ansley Gilreath homered to left field to open the seventh inning, but that would be the only run Winthrop scored.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow to play Furman at 3:45 pm and Charleston Southern at 6 pm.
