Softball Splits Final Day at Louisville

Kayla Bear recorded a team-leading five hits on the day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eastern Illinois softball splits the day's play with a 8-4 win over IUPUI and a 6-0 loss to Louisville as they close out the Red & Black Classic. Kayla Bear led the Panthers with five hits on the day. EIU is now 13-6 on the season.

The Panthers picked up a win in their first game of the day defeating IUPUI 8-4. Bear and Burton led the team with three hits each as the team tallied 12 total hits in the game.

IUPUI led the Panthers 3-1 heading into the fourth inning, but EIU scored four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to secure their 13th win this season. Mia Davis and Megan Burton started the fourth inning off with singles to left field. Andrea Roberts also singled to left field and recorded two RBI with Davis and Burton scoring. Bear recorded the Panther's last hit of the inning on a double to right center tallying two RBI and putting EIU up 5-3.

The Panthers recorded four more hits and scored three more runs through the fifth and sixth inning. The Jaguars tried to find momentum in the final inning of play, but only managed one run and fell 8-4 to EIU.
 
Roberts tallied a team-best three RBI, while Taylor Monahan stole three bases to lead the Panthers. Valerie Thompson and Michelle Rogers split time on the mound with Rogers earning the win and improved to 7-3 on the season.

The Panthers closed out the Red & Black Classic with a 6-0 loss to Louisville Saturday night. Jessica Wireman started on the mound for the Panthers and pitched 5.2 innings. Tori Johnson finished the sixth inning as Wireman collected her second loss of the season falling to 5-2.

Louisville scored five of their six runs in the first inning and added their sixth run in the fourth to hand the Panthers their sixth loss on the season.

Bear led EIU with two hits, while Breya Cooper and Burton tallied one each. Bear also recorded the only stolen base for the Panthers in the game.

EIU returns to action next weekend at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C. They open play Saturday Mar. 10 at 9 am vs. Wright State.
