CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. - Eastern Illinois held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning against Big Ten member Illinois before the Panthers fell short in their midweek game falling 5-4.
Tori Johnson and
Kayla Bear each drove home two runs for the Panthers. Bear had a lead off homer in the first before adding an RBI single in the second that put EIU up 2-0 at the time.
After Illinois tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a Bella Loya home run, Johnson delivered a big hit for the Panthers with a two-run double.
Illinois would plate three in the sixth to take the lead. Maddi Doane closed the EIU lead to one run with a solo home run. Kiana Sherlund tied the game with an RBI triple and eventually scored the winning run.
Taylor Edwards picked up the win in the circle for Illinois while
Jessica Wireman suffered the loss.
EIU will travel to Austin Peay and Murray State this weekend for OVC action. Bear was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead EIU.
