Volleyball Sweeps SIUE

EIU volleyball sweeps SIUE to open up conference play.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois volleyball team opened up conference play against SIUE Wednesday night. The Panthers were able to sweep the Cougars winning by scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-23.

With the win, EIU advances to 5-10 on the season and 1-0 in OVC play.

The first set featured balance play from both teams contesting one another to tie for a match high ten times. The Panthers were able to take the lead mid-way through the set jumping out to a 3-0 run kicked off from a Laurel Bailey kill. SIUE would attempt to come back later in the set with a 4-0 run to cut the Panther lead to two points. However, the EIU defense led by Abby Knight with two blocks was able to hold off the Cougars to win the first set 25-22.

SIUE came out aggressive in the second set jumping out to a 4-0 run to start the set. The Cougars controlled majority not allowing EIU to take the lead until the last four points. EIU strung together a 4-0 run to grab the lead from the Cougars that would end up being the difference maker in the set. EIU was able to complete the comeback winning the second set 25-23. Bailey led the EIU offense totaling five kills in the second set.

EIU would kick off the third set with a 4-0 run ignited by a Rachel McDonald attacking error. The Panthers were able to string together some runs throughout the set to give them an early lead over the Cougars. SIUE would not let the Panthers walk away with the third set as they battled back with the help of Ellen Lemasters who led SIUE in kills. The Panthers were able to secure the sweep thanks to an attacking error by Dylynn Otte, defeating SIUE 25-23.

Bailey collected her sixth double-double of the season finishing with 13 kills and 14 digs. Kylie Michael finished with 13 kills, five digs, three blocks, and an ace. Abby Knight led the Panthers defense with six blocks.

The Panthers will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on OVC opponent Tennessee State Saturday September 22 at 12 pm.
