Panther Tennis Sweeps Saint Louis

EIU men win 5-1, women post 5-2 victory

O'FALLON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's tennis swept matches on Sunday afternoon against Saint Louis as the EIU men improved to 1-1 on the season while the Panther women are now 3-0.

The EIU men picked up a point to start the match taking the doubles point by default as they posted a 5-1 win over Saint Louis.

Mike Jansen and Dan Hernandez added the first two points in singles play for EIU.  Jansen won in three sets at No. 2 singles with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory.  Hernandez won at No. 3 singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Freddie O'Brien locked up the match for EIU winning at No. 1 singles.  O'Brien won 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-8.  Gertjan De Wilder added the final EIU singles point winning at No. 4 singles 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

Saint Louis scored its lone point of the match at No. 5 singles.  The Panthers won a no decision at No. 6 singles as the Billikens did not start a player in that spot.

The EIU women improved to 3-0 on the season with 5-2 win over Saint Louis.  The Panthers jumped out early winning the doubles point with wins at No.1 and No. 2 doubles.

Rachel Papavasilopoulos pushed the Panthers lead to 2-0 with a straight set win over Ally Mckenzie at No. 1 singles.  Papavasilopoulos won 6-1, 6-1.

Saint Louis cut the lead in half with a win at No. 3 singles before Srishti Slaria gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead with a win at No. 2 singles.  Slaria won 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.

SLU again moved to within one point in the match with a win at No. 5 singles.  EIU clinched the match with Karla Contreras win at No. 6 singles.  Contreras won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.  Claire Martin added the final point for the Panthers with a three-set win at No. 4 singles.
