CHICAGO – Eastern Illinois men's tennis picked up two quick points in singles play but the Panthers could not hang on Sunday afternoon falling 5-2 to UIC.
The Flames jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match winning the point with wins at number one and number two doubles.Â
Freddie O'Brien and
Logan Charbonneau were leading 4-3 in number three doubles for the Panthers when UIC clinched the point.
The Panthers quickly responded in singles play with O'Brien and
Mike Jansen giving EIU a 2-1 match lead with wins at number one and number two singles. O'Brien won 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 over Niko Vasilewicz at number one singles. Jansen won 6-4, 6-1 over Johan Hedstrom at number two singles.
UIC would even the match with a win at number three singles and take a 3-2 match lead with a win at number six singles. The Flames clinched the deciding point at number five singles with Anthony Nguyen picking up a three set win over
Luka Knieling 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
EIU is now 6-6 on the season. UIC is 1-5.Â
