Men win 6-1, women sweep match 7-0

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's tennis opened its weekend of play with both teams defeating Millikin University on Friday afternoon at the Dodds Tennis Center in Champaign.

The EIU men won 6-1 to improve to 7-8 on the season.  Millikin dropped to 3-3.

The EIU women won 7-0 to win their third straight match and improve to 6-4 on the year.  Millikin fell to 3-11.

The Panther men opened play winning all three doubles matches to clinch the first point.  Freddie O'Brien and Logan Charbonneau earned a 6-1 win at number two doubles.

In singles play EIU won at number one, two, three, four and six singles.  Charbonneau won the first point in singles play as he picked up a win due to retirement.

Daniel Hernandez won in two sets, 6-2, 6-4, at number three singles and O'Brien won in two sets, 6-4, 6-4, at number one singles to clinch the match.

Gertjan De Wilder and Gage Kingsmith rounded out the EIU men's players with wins at number six and number two singles respectively.

In the women's match the Panthers jumped out quickly winning all three doubles matches by scores of 6-0.

In singles play the Panthers won each singles match with a straight set victory.  Claire Martin at number four singles and Karla Contreras at number six singles both won by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Shelby Anderson won at number five singles by a score of 6-0, 6-1.  Rachel Papavasilopoulos, Srishti Slaria and Abby Carpenter won playing in number one through three singles.

Both EIU teams will return to action on Saturday afternoon playing at North Central College.
