EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis played its second closely contested match of the conference season on Tuesday afternoon as the Panthers beat SIUE, 4-3, to improve to 1-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

EIU is now 9-6 overall, 1-1 in the league. SIUE dropped to 5-9 overall, 0-2 in the OVC.

Srishti Slaria had the big singles win for the Panthers as the senior won the deciding point in three sets over Alina Munteanu at number two singles. Slaria won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to give the Panthers the one point decision.

Slaria opened the match playing at number one doubles with
Rachel Papavasilopoulos as the tandem helped EIU capture the doubles point. Slaria and Papavasilopoulos won 6-2.Â
Abby Carpenter and
Karla Contreras then won in a tie-breaker at number three doubles to clinch the point. Carpenter and Contreras won 7-6 (13-11).

In singles play, SIUE quickly jumped out in front 2-1 as they won at number six and number three singles. Papavasilopoulos then won at number one singles to even the match at 2-2. The sophomore beat Lara Tupper 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 13-2 in singles play this spring.

Claire Martin would push the Panthers in front in the match with her two set win at number four singles. Martin beat Raillane Kamdem 6-3, 6-4. Â

Ann-Christine Link would knock off Contreras in three sets at number five singles to even the match at 3-3 setting the stage for Slaria's match winner for the Panthers.
