The Eastern Illinois baseball played a double-header against Southeast Missouri to wrap of their conference series on Monday. The Panthers swept the conference double-header winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 9-6.
With the win, EIU improves to 14-13 (7-5 OVC), while SEMO drops to 14-14 (4-8 OVC).
Game One: EIU 1, SEMO 0
The first game of the double-header between EIU and SEMO featured a pitcher's duel between
Spenser Dexter and Noah Niznik.
Dexter earned the win on the mound for the Panthers, improving to 3-1 on the season. Dexter tossed six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts.
Niznik suffered his second loss of the season for SEMO. Niznik tossed 5.1 innings with seven hits, six strikeouts, and one run.
The Panthers were able to score the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Ryan Knernschield drove
Jimmy Govern in as the winning run in with a fielder's choice to shortstop.
Alex Stevenson made his second appearance of the season during today's game after returning to the mound after an injury earlier in the season. Stevenson picked up his first save of the season tossing 1.0 inning with a strikeout.
Game Two: EIU 9, SEMO 6
The second game of the double-header featured a scoring frenzy compared to the first game. SEMO got on the board scoring two runs throughout the first two innings.
EIU would have a five-run second inning to pull away from SEMO.
Christian Pena kicked off the second inning rally with a single to short.
Matt Waznis kept the rally alive with a single up the middle.
Trey Sweeney would load the bases when he wore a fastball.
Tyler Tesmond drove a two run single through the left side to tie the game at two. Govern would give the Panthers the lead with a two run single up the middle.
Grant Emme kept the scoring frenzy alive in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right field.
The Panthers would continue to battle against the Red Hawks pitching staff, scoring in four straight innings. Tesmond drove in his fourth RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two run single down the left field to give the Panthers a 9-3 lead.
Foster Anshutz picked up his fifth win on the mound for the Panthers improving to 5-0. Anshutz tossed 4.0 innings with three runs, and three hits.
Tyler Jones picked up his first save of the season for the Panthers. Jones tossed 3.0 innings with a strikeout.
Up Next:
The Panthers will play two midweek contests on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Tomorrow the Panthers will head to Normal, Illinois to take on non-conference opponent Illinois State at 5 pm. The Panthers will return to Coaches Stadium to take on non-conference opponent Illinois College on Wednesday at 3 pm.
