The Eastern Illinois baseball team opened up their conference series against Eastern Kentucky Friday afternoon. The first game of the series featured heavy winds and a pitcher's duel between the starters. EKU was able to rally in the top of the ninth to steal the first game of the series against EIU.
With the loss, EIU drops to 16-18 (8-8 OVC).
The Panthers switched up their approach to the pitching rotation for the week, throwing
Spenser Dexter in the first game of the series. Dexter kept the Panthers in the game through seven innings. Dexter finished with six strikeouts and two runs.
Trey Sweeney got the Panthers on the board first with two of his three RBIs on the afternoon. Sweeney hit a two-run single up the middle to give the Panthers a two-run lead in the bottom of the third inning.
EKU would tie the game at two with a two run seventh inning to end starting pitcher Dexter's afternoon.
Sweeney would drive the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a one-run single through the left side.
Corey Conklin would drive in the winning run for the Colonels with a two-run triple to right center in the top of the ninth inning.
Logan Teague got the start for EKU in game one of the series. Teague tossed 7.1 innings for the Colonels with three strikeouts and two runs.
Alex Stevenson suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers falling to 0-2 on the season. Stevenson tossed 2.0 innings with a strikeout.
