The Eastern Illinois baseball team closed out their series against Eastern Kentucky Saturday. The Panthers were able to split the weekend doubleheader with the Colonels with a walk-off win in the second game. EKU was able to secure the series with a win in game one.
Game One: EKU 7, WIU 3
The first game featured a pitching matchup between the aces for both teams. Kaven Brown was able to walk away with his eighth win of the season as EKU defeated the Panthers 7-3.
Michael YaSenka got the start for the Panthers to kick off the weekend doubleheader. YaSenka suffered the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season. YaSenka tossed 7.0 innings with eleven strikeouts and six runs.
The Colonels got on the board first scoring four unanswered runs through the first three innings.
Hunter Morris would give the Panthers some life in the bottom of the third inning with a three run homerun that would cut the EKU lead to one run.
EKU was able to string together three runs through the last six innings of play to give their starter his eighth win of the season. Aaron Ochsenbein earned his sixth save of the season, tossing 2.0 innings in relief to secure the victory for the Colonels.
Game Two: EIU 10, EKU 9
The second game featured a late inning comeback by the Panthers for their first walk off victory of the season. EKU jumped out to a 9-2 lead through the first seven innings of play.
The Panthers would score in each of the last three innings of play to steal the last game of the series from the Colonels.
The late rally started in the bottom of the seventh.
Grant Emme would drive in two runs with a two-run single up the middle.
Jimmy Govern and Emme would score when Morris would reach safely on a wild pitch after he struck out.
Ryan Knernschield would drive in Morris with a double down the right field line to keep the seventh inning rally alive.
Emme would cut the lead down to one run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in
Trey Sweeney.
The Panthers would rally in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to pull off the late game comeback.
Keith Kerrigan would drive in the tying run with a single to right field to score
Tyler Tesmond. On his single Kerrigan was able to move into scoring position on a throwing error by the right fielder. Sweeney would be the hero for EIU driving in the winning run with a single through the left side.
Blake Malatestinic picked up his first win of the season tossing 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
