NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis swept a pair of Saturday matches on the road to wrap up a busy weekend in Music City. EIU beat Tennessee State 5-2 in a OVC match to begin the day before knocking off NAIA member Martin Methodist, 5-0, on the trip back to Charleston.
EIU improved to 11-7 overall, 2-2 in the OVC. TSU fell to 5-11 overall, 0-5 in the OVC. Martin Methodist fell to 7-8.
In the morning opener at TSU, the EIU women won two of the three matches in doubles to jump in front 1-0 in the match. EIU juggled its doubles pairings on Saturday with
Rachel Papavasilopoulos and
Karla Contreras winning at number one doubles 6-4.
Srishti Slaria was paired with
Abby Carpenter at number three doubles winning 6-3.
In singles play Papavasilopoulos continued her solid sophomore season with a 7-5, 6-1 win at number one singles. EIU was able to add wins at number two, three and four singles. Slaria won 6-2, 6-1 at number two singles.
Claire Martin won 6-5, 1-6, 6-2 at number three singles and Carpenter won 6-3, 6-4 at number four singles.
In the night cap at Martin Methodist, the two schools played under NAIA rules with each doubles match counting as one point. EIU was able to sweep all three doubles matches to quickly jump in front 3-0 in the contest.
Shelby Anderson and Carpenter played together at number three doubles and walked off the court with an 8-0 decision. EIU won 8-4 at both number one and number two doubles.
In singles play Papavasilopoulos and Slaria won the first two matches at number one and number two singles to clinch the match. Martin's match at number three singles was left unfinished after the Panthers won the match. Papavasilopoulos won 6-1, 6-2. Slaria won 6-1, 6-3.
