Eastern Illinois men's soccer opened exhibition play on Thursday afternoon with the Panthers picking up a 1-0 decision at Valparaiso.
 
The lone goal of the match was scored by sophomore Chad Hamler with the assist coming from Luke Kurili.
 
EIU had a good defensive effort on the day led by veteran players Edgar Mesa, Cameron Behm and Jonathan Burke.
 
Several newcomers saw considerable time on the pitch during the first of two exhibition matches for the Panthers during the preseason.
 
EIU returns to action on Monday evening with an exhibition match at Saint Louis.  The season opener is Aug. 30 at Evansville.
