CHARLESTON, Illinois - Eastern Illinois beat Belmont in a battle on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers scored the game winning goal in overtime off of a
Christian Sosnowski cross to
Davi Girardi. Girardi's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a more pivotal time for EIU with the golden goal coming in the 94th minute. The Panthers stay undefeated at home as their record moves to 3-4, while the Bruins record drops to 1-6-1 on the season.
The Panthers offense looked stout against a physical Belmont team. Eastern Illinois took a total of 11 shots, seven of which were on goal.
Edgar Mesa got the Panthers their first score of the day with a header coming in the 49th minute off a
Chad Hamler assist. Following two Belmont goals in the 51st and 61st minute,
Shady Omar put the Panthers back in the match with a goal from the top of the box off of the assist by
Munir Sherali in the 64th minute.Â
The defense played solid as well despite giving up two goals. Goalkeeper
Jonathan Burke managed six saves on the match while facing 12 shots, eight of which were on goal.
The Panthers take on their first Summit League opponent on Saturday against Denver. EIU will return to Lakeside Field next Tuesday against IUPUI.Â
