CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's soccer played its home opener on Sunday afternoon after facing three tough opponents away from Lakeside Field to open the 2019 campaign. At the end of the day, Purdue Fort Wayne was able to head home a late goal to beat EIU 1-0.
The Panthers fell to 0-4 on the season while Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 2-1-2.
The Mastodons went on the attack early in the first half and were able to draw a penalty kick in the first five minutes of the match. The opportunity on the PK went wide left as Purdue Fort Wayne finished with a 6-1 shots advantage in the first half. The would end the day with a 12-6 shots margin.
EIU goal keeper
Sara Teteak made three first half saves before adding three more in the second half. Mastodons keeper Lorah Pund stopped all four EIU shots on goal, most of which came in the final ten minutes of the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne finally broke the scoreless tie on an indirect kick as Breanna Buche headed home a ball served into the box by Hannah Kroger in the 76th minute. Kayla Wisniewski had three shots on goal to lead the Mastodons.
EIU's offensive attack was led by freshman
Nicoletta Anuci with two shots on goal.
Itxaso Aguero and
Sarah DeWolf both added a shot on net.
The Panthers return to action next Sunday hosting Chicago State at 1 p.m.
