DAYTON, Ohio – The Eastern Illinois men's soccer team lost in the final minute to the Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2 on Sunday night.
With the match tied 2-2, Ohio State's Jake Scheper score the game winning goal in the 89th minute off an assist by Jack Holland and Brayden Durbin. The Panthers fall to 0-3 on the season while the Buckeyes improve to 3-1. The men's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday at Lakeside field against Saint Xavier.Â
The Panthers defense played physical, but was not able to contain OSU's offense. EIU managed six shots on the match while the Buckeyes had 23.
Ohio State got out to an early lead with a goal in the third minute off a Joe Ortiz assisted goal to Devyn Etling. The Buckeyes second goal of the period was scored by Luis Hernandez off of the assist from Matteo Bennati in the 39th minute. The Panther's only shot attempt of the first period was from
Cole Harkrader in the 34th minute.
After the intermission, EIU took advantage with a goal by the senior
Christian Sosnowski in the 70th minute. Sosnowski's goal was assisted by
Cameron Behm and
Shady Omar putting the score at 2-1. The Panther's started to get the offense rolling following the goal.
Davi Girardi and Jonathan Cappocci each put up shots in the 82nd minute. EIU tied the game up 2-2 after an Omar penalty kick in the 82nd minute. The Panther's had managed to take three shots in one minute of play, doubling their attempts on the match.
