CHICAGO – Eastern Illinois men's tennis opened the 2020 season with a win as the Panthers beat Olivet Nazarene 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
EIU jumped out early picking up the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Gage Kingsmith and
Pau Riera won 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles spot while
Christos Kyrillou and
Juan Carlos Garrido won 6-3 at No. 3.
In singles play EIU won five of the six matches as all were played to completion.
Gertjan De Wilder and
Thomas Wallace picked up early points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to give EIU a 3-0 lead in the match.
Riera would then clinch the match for the Panthers at the No. 4 singles position with a two set win over Jonathan Hentschel, 6-3, 7-6.
Mike Jansen won in straight sets playing at No. 1 while Kyrillou needed three sets to beat Alex Verdu at No. 2 singles. Kyrillou won the final match of the day 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
