CHICAGO – Eastern Illinois women's tennis was edged in the first of two weekend matches in the Chicagoland area as Green Bay won three straight singles matches to take a 4-3 win.
EIU fell to 5-7 on the season while Green Bay improved to 5-4. The Panthers will face Chicago State on Sunday.
EIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a point in doubles action. Rachel Papavasilopoulos teamed with Lauren Ellis to win 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Christine Gouws and Elizaveta Bukraba-Ulanova clinched the point for the Panthers with a 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
Following a win at No. 6 singles by Green Bay, EIU went up 2-1 in the match as Papavasilopoulos won in straight sets at No. 1 singles. She picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win.
The Phoenix then won matches at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles to claim the match. Tiana Glazbrook needed three sets to beat Gouws at No. 3 singles. She won 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Brittany Steven closed out the match with a win for EIU at No. 5 singles. She won 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
