Men's Tennis Opens Busy Weekend In Cincinnati Area

EIU loses first of two Friday matches, 4-0 at Dayton



Eastern Illinois men's tennis opened a busy weekend in the Cincinnati area on Friday afternoon playing at Dayton before an evening match at Northern Kentucky.  The weekend wraps up on Saturday afternoon at Xavier.
 
In the opener, EIU lost 4-0 to Dayton as three singles matches were left unfinished after the Flyers claimed the match.
 
In doubles play, EIU picked up the win at No. 2 doubles with Daniel Hernandez and Christos Kyrillou winning 6-3.  Dayton would claim the overall doubles point with wins at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, and No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
 
In the singles play EIU had its matches at No. 2, 3 and 6 singles left unfinished after Dayton was able to secure the three singles points needed to win the overall match.  All three finalized matches ended in straight sets. 
 
In the unfinished contests, Leighton Brandon was even in the second set at 4-4 after losing the opening set 6-4 at No. 2 singles.  Kyrillou was trailing 3-2 in the second set at No. 3 singles after falling 6-4 in the opening set.  Cameron Slabbert lost the opening set 7-6 at No. 6 singles and was behind 4-2 in the second. 
 
EIU fell to 2-4 on the season with the afternoon loss while Dayton improved to 6-5. 
 
In the evening match, EIU played at Northern Kentucky, losing 5-2 as the Norse took the final two singles points after a closely contested match.

NKU won the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.  The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with NKU leading 5-2.

The Norse extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 1 singles before EIU scored its first point in the match.  Karan Srivastava picked up a straight set win, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles over Andrew Niehaus.

The lead was pushed back out to two points after NKU won at No. 4 singles to lead 3-1.   Leighton Brandon then won a three set battle at No. 2 singles to bring the Panthers back to within one point in the match.  He won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7) and rallied to win the third set 6-3 after dropping the second 1-6.  

NKU won the match with a point at No. 6 singles before Charles Courteau was set down in three sets at No. 5 singles for the final score.  Courteau lost 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.

EIU falls to 2-5 on the year while NKU remained unbeaten at 4-0.
