CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis match against UT Martin came down to the final set on Friday afternoon as UTM edged EIU 4-3 in Ohio Valley Conference women's tennis play.
EIU jumped out on top 1-0 in the match as they won a tiebreak at No. 3 doubles to clinch the first point.
Rachel Papavasilopoulos and
Brittany Steven won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and then
Addison Brown and
Christine Gouws won 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 doubles for the Panthers.
In the singles play, UTM quickly took a 3-1 lead as they won in the bottom three spots of the singles line-up.
Papavasilopoulos then closed the margin to one point with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles.
Elizaveta Bukraba-Ulanova evened the match at 3-3 with her three set win at No. 2 singles. Bukraba-Ulanova won 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
The match was then decided at No. 3 singles with Gouws facing Aziza Aubin. Gouws won the opening set 6-4 before Aubin rallied to win 6-4, 6-4 in the final two sets to clinch the match for the Skyhawks.
