GAME TWO
Belmont took the lead in the bottom of the opening inning of the first game of the doubleheader. Doherty pitched well, striking out three in the opening frame, but the Panthers struggled to put the bat on the ball.
The Panthers' first run scored came in the top of the third inning. The rally was started by
Lucas DiLuca, who came through with a single into right-field. The Canuck stole second to bring up Sweeney, the OVC's RBI leader. Sweeney came through with a single into right to score a run for EIU.
The Bruins scored another in the sixth before the Panthers could strike again in the seventh. Smith came up to bat with two outs and hit a deep shot over the center-field wall to put the score 3-2.
The Bruins went on a tear after the Panthers pulled it close and defeated Eastern Illinois 10-2 to make the final game the deciding factor for the series.
GAME THREE
The Panthers kicked off the series clincher with a three-run first inning.
Dane Toppel started the rally with a single off a bunt and stole second after reaching.
Ryan Knernschield reached after being hit by a pitch, and Kerrigan singled to load the bases for Doyle. Doyle managed a hit that scored Toppel and left the bases loaded for
Christian Pena. Pena pushed a single up the middle of the infield to score Knernshield and Kerrigan and give the Panthers an early 3-0 lead.
Belmont retaliated with a two-run first, tied the game in the third, and took the lead in the fourth.Â
The Panthers managed to put a few more runs on the board in the sixth inning after Kerrigan led off with a single. Doyle doubled into left-center field and scored the speedy Kerrigan. Smith added another run after he pulled a single into right field.
The Bruins added a run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, but Sweeney quickly nullified that run with a solo home run to deep center field.Â
The Bruins added more insurance to their lead in the seventh.
Ryan Ignoffo was relieved for
Hayden Birdsong, who was relieved for
Jason DeCicco after letting up a hit. The Bruins went on to score two runs in the inning to grow the lead to 10-6.
The Bruins held the lead and went on to win the day, 2-0, and the series, 2-1.
ON DECK
The Panthers will travel to Valparaiso next week to face Valpo on Wednesday, Apr. 7, at 3 p.m.
