Mitchell Hits Three Home Runs In Softball Split

Panthers split Saturday DH at Eastern Kentucky



RICHMOND, Ky. – Haley Mitchell hit three home runs on Saturday afternoon as Eastern Illinois split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky.

Mitchell had one home run in the opening game, a 7-3 loss to EKU.  In the second game Mitchell added two bombs during a 13-11 EIU win.

In the opener EKU scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning eventually jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.  Miranda Lopez had the big two run single in the first inning for the Colonels. 

Tori Peterson pitched six strong innings for the Colonels picking up her 16th win of the season.   EIU added solo home runs by Mitchell and Aniya Holt in the sixth and seventh innings to cut into the Colonels winning total.

In the second game EKU took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with Carly Robinson delivering a two run single to left.  Earlier in the game Robinson had a solo home run going 2-for-2 in game for EKU.

In the top of the fifth, EIU cut the EKU lead to one with a two-run homer by Mitchell, her second long ball of the day. 

The offense would continue in the frame for EIU as the Panthers scored ten runs in the inning.  Megan Burton added a two-run double with Hannah Cravens, Holt and Mia Davis all adding RBI singles.  Mitchell connected for her second two-run homer of the inning to close the Panthers ten run outburst. 

EIU added an insurance run in the sixth as Andrea Sampson scored on a wild pitch.   Sydney Cammon picked up the win in relief before Jade Montgomery closed out the game following a six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth for the Colonels.  In the EKU sixth Mattira Morales had a two run single before Ariyana Miranda hit a grand slam.

Mitchell had five hits and six RBI for the Panthers in the doubleheader moving her career home run total to 39.  Davis had three hits in the two games becoming the seventh player in school history with 200 career hits. 

Holt added five hits on the day with Katie Nicholson picking up two hits in each game.
