CHARLESTON, Ill. – Indiana State took a two goal lead just over three minutes into the second half and had that lead stand up as the Sycamores slid past Eastern Illinois in the regular season opener for both schools.
Â
Katie Yankey scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute as she redirected a ball right at the mouth of the goal. The assist was by Sasha Thompson, one of two Thompson had on the day.
Â
That would be the only shot on goal in the first half for Indiana State as EIU had four total shots in the period but none were on target.
Â
Audrey Stephens pushed the ISU lead out to 2-0 in the 48th minute as she redirected a cross into the box by Thompson.
Â
EIU would counter in the 63rd minute with
Zenaya Barnes striking home a shot to the upper right corner of the goal.Â
Nicoletta Anuci assisted on the goal.
Â
ISU tacked on an insurance goal just three minutes later as Chole Tesny fired a low skidding shot that just beat the EIU keeper. Â
Â
Eva Munoz added two shots on goal for the Panthers as EIU had nine total shots in the match.Â
