Eastern Illinois hosts Illinois State on Thursday night for the Panthers home opener as the Redbirds will be making a visit to First Mid Court at Lantz Arena for the first time since the 1981-82 season.Ā EIU dropped its season opener at No. 23 Illinois on Monday night 87-57 with two players scoring in double figures for the Panthers.Ā Illinois State lost its season opener at home falling by three points to Western Illinois, 71-68.
HODGES SOLID DEBUT
Junior college transfer Kinyon Hodges was the Panthers leading scorer and rebounder in the opener at No. 23 Illinois.Ā Hodges finished with 14 points and five rebounds, one of two EIU players in double figures.Ā Hodges had several electric plays with three dunks among his five made field goals. He would also make a team-high six trips to the line going 3-of-6 at the stripe.Ā Hodges was a JUCO All-Region selection last season at Three Rivers College.
ROSE REACHES DOUBLE FIGURES
Transfer guard Yaakema Rose Jr is used to scoring in double figures and did so once again in the Panthers season opener at No. 23 Illinois.Ā Rose, a transfer from Missouri St. Louis, finished with ten points and three steals against the Illini.Ā During three seasons at UMSL, Rose had 49 double figure scoring games.Ā He was also among the nation's leaders in steals finishing 14th in NCAA Division II last season with 68 steals.Ā
PANTHERS PICKING POCKETS
Eastern Illinois had 12 steals in the season opener at No. 23 Illinois as the Panthers are the early season OVC leader in that category.Ā Last season EIU averaged 6.3 steals per game with four games with double figure steals, the last on Feb. 10 with ten against Tennessee Tech.Ā Three of EIU's double figure steal games came in OVC play.
