EIU Comeback Falls Short, Lose 3-2 At Chicago State

EIU takes on Pacific tomorrow at noon for final match at Windy City Invitational


CHICAGO, Ill. - Eastern Illinois (2-3, 0-0 OVC) volleyball's comeback falls short in their second match at the Windy City Tournament to Chicago State (2-3) by a final score of 3-2. Despite the loss, three Panthers posted 10+ kills in the match. Final scores were: 25-14, 20-25, 25-27, 25-20, 15-17.

The Panthers offense took a jump late in the match with a season high .206 hitting percentage. Giovana Larregui Lopez led a group of three players with at least 10 kills with 17 of her own. Elisavet Papageorgiou hit a season high 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .290.

Ella Collins continued her hot start to the season with 13 kills and 12 digs. The Panthers earned 62 kills in the match compared to the 58 by the Cougars. Ireland Hieb also added nine kills in the match. 

Chicago State gave life to EIU after hitting 36 errors on attacks, while the Panthers limited their errors to 25. EIU played stout defense for the majority of the match while limiting CSU to a .122 hitting percentage.

Christina Martinez Mundo was active again on defense with 38 digs (season-high). Last week she average five kills a set which ranked third in the Ohio Valley Conference. Larregui Lopez was second on the team in digs with 15.

Emily Wilcox was very active on defense in her first start of the season with three block assists and one block solo. Papageorgiou and Collins also added two block assists. EIU totaled six blocks compared to CSU's 10.

Catalina Rochaix led the way in assists for EIU with a season-high 27. Summerlyn Smith also contributed 19 assists for the Panthers. EIU was able to assists on 56 of 62 kills during the match. CSU was able to close the gap against the Panthers with eight service aces compared to three for Eastern.

Yanlis Feliz led the way for the Cougars with 16 kills and 10 digs. Four other cougars added nine kills in the match to help CSU. Jaclyn Inclan and Yunju Lee combined for 47 assists while Andrea Calderon added 28 digs to secure the win for Chicago State.

Eastern Illinois will play their final match of the Windy City Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Match will be streamed on FloSports and can be followed along with LiveStats.
