DEKALB, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's tennis opened the 2023 spring season on Friday evening with a road match at Northern Illinois. The Panthers battled during the 7-0 loss to the Huskies who improved to 2-3 on the season.
Christine Gouws moved up to No. 1 singles and won her opening set against Erika Dimitriev, 7-5. Dimitriev would win the second set 6-1 and then clinch the point with a 10-3 win in the third set.
Gouws also played at No. 1 singles for the Panthers pairing with
Elizaveta Bukraba-Ulanova. The tandem lost 6-3 in a good match for EIU to open spring play.
NIU clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
In singles play Bukraba-Ulanova played at No. 2 singles falling 6-3, 6-3 to Diana Lukyanova.
The match was the first in the collegiate career for a pair of Panther freshmen with
Jemma Booth, who joined the program at the winter break playing at No. 3 singles.
Madeline Monroy slid up to play at No. 4 singles.
EIU wraps up its opening weekend of tennis action on Sunday at Illinois State.
