Swimming Heads To Lewis University To Start 2023

Panthers last swam on November 13 at the A3 Performance

ON-TAP: Eastern Illinois' swimming returns after almost a two month break to take on Division II Lewis University out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. This marks the first time since the 2020-21 season that the Panthers have traveled to Romeoville, Ill.

SUMMIT LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL: The Summit League released their men's and women's swimming and diving preseason poll earlier this season. Eastern Illinois was selected to finish in seventh in both the men's and women's division. During the Summit League Championships last season, the Panthers finished in sixth place.

Southern Indiana and Lindenwood have also been added to the Summit League this season. The Screaming Eagles were picked to finish in seventh in both polls while Lindenwood was picked to finish in third in both after playing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference last season. Denver was selected as both the men's and women's preseason champion.

LAST TIME OUT: The Panthers last swam during the A3 Performance Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois University on Nov. 13. EIU found success on the women's die picking up a third place overall finish in the meet. The men's finished in fifth place in the invite.

Camryn Lewis led all Panthers with two victories in the meet while winning the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.33. She also won the 50 free with a final time of 23.50. She would go on to win Summit League Swimmer of the Week.

Corinne Staneart broke the Eastern Illinois all-time record in the 200 yard IM during the A3 Performance. Her finals time of 2:07.15 broke the record held by Lauren Oostman back during the 2019-20 season.

Eastern Illinois' last meet against IUPUI on Dec. 3 was postponed to later this season.

SUMMIT LEAGUE TOP TEP: Five swimmers from EIU swimming are in the top ten in times in the Summit League this season. For the men's team, Andrew Herman ranks eighth in the Summit League in the 50 back with a time of 23.24. Herman also ranks 10th in the 100 yard backstroke (50.10).

Camryn Lewis remains in the top ten despite the two month break with her time of 23.50 in the 50 yard freestyle which puts her in ninth place in the league. Kennedy Darensbourg makes an appearance on the list at spot number 10 in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:40.01.

Corinne Staneart was the highest ranking Panther in any event after ranking third in the Summit League in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.97. Staneart also ranks ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.15.

Making her first appearance this season, Cydney Adams makes the list after placing a top ten time in the 200 fly (2:09.94) during the A3 Performance Invite.

NEXT UP: Eastern Illinois will travel to Valparaiso University to face off against the Beacons for a second time this season. The meet will start at 5 p.m. on Jan. 20 in Valparaiso, Ind.

HEAD COACH: An experienced coach at the collegiate level with additional experience on the international level, Johnathan Jordan comes to EIU following a seven-year stint as the head coach at Lincoln College where he helped grow the program from a two-year college program to a member swimming at the NAIA level. He becomes the ninth coach in school history at EIU.
 
On the international level, Jordan was a member of the Marshall Islands Swimming Federation coaching staff with athletes competing in the World Championships, Pacific Games Oceania Games and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.   He also worked on the Fiji Swimming Federation coaching staff for one summer helping develop the program's Olympic qualification standards and as a member of the Oceania National Olympic Committee.
