MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State used a quick spurt midway through the opening half to break open a close game and pick up a 69-59 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Arena.
EIU fell to 6-11 overall, 2-2 in the OVC. Â Morehead State improved to 10-7, 3-1 in the OVC.
The game opened back-and-forth between the two schools with four early lead changes. EIU had six points from
Yaakema Rose Jr., and
Kinyon Hodges had five points as EIU led early. Thomas led 13-12 following a lay-up by
Kyle Thomas.
Morehead State then went on a 12-2 run to open up a 21-13 lead with 10:39 left in the first half. Trent Scott scored five points in the run.
The Eagles led 38-30 at the half after holding a 22-10 rebound advantage.Â
EIU cut into that rebound margin in the second half as they finished with a 37-31 rebound deficit.Â
Dan Luers led EIU with five rebounds. Thomas had four offensive rebounds.
Hodges led EIU with 12 points, one of three EIU players in double figures. Â
CJ Lane scored 11 points with several coming late in the game.Â
Cameron Haffner added 11 for his second straight solid performance off the bench.
Drew Thelwell led Morehead State with 20 points including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. The Eagles were 5-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half and 7-of-17 for the game.Â
Kalil Thomas (13), Alex Gross (12) and Jake Wolfe (11) all finished in double figures.
