Eastern Illinois alumnus and long time NFL head coach Mike Shanahan returned to the area during the 2022-23 school year to serve as the guest of honor at the Panther Club Golf Outing at Effingham Country Club.
 
Shanahan won two Super Bowls as the head coach of the Denver Broncos and ranks 13th on the all-time NFL wins list with 170 career wins as the head coach with three different franchises.
 
Shanahan returned to campus spending time with donors and participating in the golf outing which raises funds to help support EIU student-athletes.  In addition Shanahan provided four tickets to this past year's Super Bowl which were auctioned off to raise additional financial support for EIU.
