Eastern Illinois continues its tough early season schedule as the Panthers will play on Thursday night at nationally ranked Illinois in the first of back-to-back games against Big Ten opponents.Ā EIU travels next week to face Minnesota.Ā The Panthers opened the season this past weekend with a pair of road losses at North Dakota and North Dakota State to stand at 0-2 on the season.Ā Illinois is off to a 2-0 start as the Fighting Illini landed in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll at No. 23 following wins over No. 19 Florida State and Marquette.
McGLONE JOINS ELITE COMPANY
Last season
Macy McGlone was second in the NCAA in double-doubles with 26 earning both OVC Player of the Year and OVC Defender of the Year honors with 17.8 points, 11.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game averages.Ā Early this season she has picked up right where she left off picking up double-doubles in each of the opening two games (24 pts / 13 reb at UND & 27 pts / 14 reb at NDSU) and earning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for week one of the season.Ā On Sunday at North Dakota State she became the 28th player in school history to score 1,000 points.Ā Already a member of the EIU career 600 rebound and 100 block club, McGlone became just the fourth player in program history to record 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 100 blocks joining Toni Collins, Rachel Galligan and Sabina Oroszova.Ā Ā
FLOWERS LEADS IN STEALS, AGAIN
Kiyley Flowers is no stranger to being among the Ohio Valley Conference leaders in steals as she led the conference each of the last two seasons while playing at fellow OVC member Southeast Missouri.Ā This season the transfer senior guard is once again on top of the OVC steals leaderboard after just one week of action.Ā Flowers has 13 steals through two games this season to rank second in the NCAA in total steals and first in the NCAA in steals per game.Ā Lyla Kahrimanovic of McNeese is the NCAA leader in total steals with 15 with three games played.Ā In Sunday's game at North Dakota State, Flowers had eight steals.Ā The last EIU player to record eight or more steals in a game was Kira Arthofer with eight against Tennessee State on March 2, 2022.Ā Melanie Hatfield (1985 vs. Wisconsin) and Nancy Kassebaum (1979 vs. Dayton) both hold the EIU single game record for steals with 11.Ā Ā
