Eastern Illinois plays the final game of the DePaul MTE Classic on Friday as the Panthers host Northern Illinois as their final opponent of the event. EIU opened play in the MTE event on Nov. 19 at DePaul and then played on Sunday afternoon at Valparaiso. EIU now hosts the final game of the tournament with the Huskies coming to town. The Panthers fell to 1-5 on the season following Sunday's loss at Valpo. Northern Illinois is currently 2-4 on the season having already played at DePaul and has a Wednesday afternoon game at Valpo before traveling to Charleston.
SHELTON SCORING FOR PANTHERS
Nakyel Shelton continues to score for the Panthers as he led EIU with 20 points on Sunday at Valparaiso. It marked the fourth time in six games this season that Shelton has finished a game as EIU's leading scorer. The big night increased Shelton's season scoring average to 17.2 points per game which ranks third in the OVC entering the week. Last season Shelton scored 20 or more points in a game five times with a season high of 24 points against Western Illinois. He has been in double figures all six games this season and has 44 double figure scoring games for his career. Shelton has done his scoring in a variety of ways this season as he was 8-of-16 from the field on Sunday at Valparaiso. In the previous game at DePaul, Shelton's scoring came at the line as he was 11-of-11 from the free throw line. He would have his consecutive free throw streak end at 17 straight with a miss at Valparaiso.
JACOBI JUST MISSES DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Kooper Jacobi flirted with a double-double for the second time this season on Sunday at Valparaiso as the graduate student finished with 13 points and nine rebounds against the Beacons. Jacobi's other near miss was at Northwestern where he posted totals of 14 points and nine rebounds. Sandwiched in between those two games was a 22 point, eight rebound night at DePaul. On the season Jacobi is averaging 13.3 points per game while ranking second in the OVC in rebounding at 8.3 per contest. In his EIU career Jacobi has three double-doubles including one earlier this season against Earlham College (16 pts / 11 reb). Last season he had double-doubles against Illinois and IU Indy while coming up one rebound short of a double-double in three other contests.
