Women's Tennis Splits Sunday Matches

Panthers pick up first win of year 4-3 over Northern Iowa



Eastern Illinois women's tennis split a pair of matches on Sunday as they wrapped up a two-day trip which included three total matches.   EIU beat Northern Iowa 4-3 on Sunday morning before a 4-0 loss at Northwestern in the evening.

EIU beat Northern Iowa with the Panthers opening the match with a win in doubles with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. 

Aleyla Wooten and Michelle Kostadinova won at No. 1 doubles with a 7-5 score.  Ornella Lomenzo and Luisa Renovales Salazar won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Northern Iowa claimed two points in singles play by default as EIU did not have players entered in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the playing order.  UNI would win its third point with a win at No. 1 singles.

EIU won the match with solid play at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots.  Charleigh Fay won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles spot.  Luisa Renovales Salazar won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.  Emma Plilpovic-Kljajic had the final point at No. 4 singles winning 6-3, 6-4.

In the evening match Northwestern picked up a 4-0 win with matches played at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions in the singles playing order left unfinished.

The Wildcats won the doubles point winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.   Aleyla Wooten and Michelle Kostadinova were trailing 4-2 at No. 1 doubles when Northwestern clinched the overall point.

In singles play, Northwestern picked up one point by default as EIU did not have a player in the No. 6 singles spot.  The Wildcats then won at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles to clinch the match.

Charleigh Fay played well at No. 2 singles for EIU losing the first set 6-1 but leading 4-3 in the second when Northwestern won the overall match.
