Eastern Illinois will look to continue to dominate early on in OVC play after a series sweep over Lindenwood this past weekend. On Friday, EIU tied the school record for most points scored in a four-set match with 103. Moving through the schedule, the Panthers will travel to Evansville, Indiana, to face the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana.
Looking Back: The Panthers opened up conference play with two statement victories over the preseason second-place finishing team, the Lindenwood Lions. In addition, EIU debuted their new volleyball facility with a special presentation for the Gardella family prior to the match on Saturday. Over the weekend, multiple Panthers players were dominant, which led to Head Coach Ryan Millar's first conference victories of his Eastern Illinois career. Destiny Walker led the way with 33 kills and 12 digs, followed by Katie Kopshever, who tallied 25 kills and 16 digs. Defensively, Ariadna Pereles was a star, with a weekend high of 37 digs. Catalina Roxhaix earned OVC Setter of the Week for her performances, in which she produced 90 assists and 18 digs.
About the Panthers: EIU continues to outshine the preseason projections, taking down the preseason-picked second-best team with ease. After the first weekend of OVC play, EIU is in a 4-way tie for first place with each team undefeated. Head Coach Ryan Millar picked up his first two victories of his OVC coaching career and has led the Panthers to the highest winning percentage in the conference up to this date. In addition, EIU also sits at the top of the conference in opponent hitting percentage at .185. Destiny Walker is second in the OVC for kills per set with 3.88 and has 167 overall. Emma Schroeder has returned to the lineup and is fourth in the OVC for blocks per set with 1.03. Catalina Rochaix is leading the conference and is 27th in the country in assists per set with 9.93 and has recorded 427 on the season. Ariadna Pereles is placed second in the OVC and 29th in the country for digs per set with 4.65. As a team, EIU has recorded 12.7 kills, 11.8 assists, 16.2 digs, and 2.0 blocks per set.
About the Eagles: Southern Indiana has had a rough start to the year so far with a 4-10 record and 0-2 in the OVC. The Eagles dropped both matches against Morehead State this past weekend. They have key wins over Northern Kentucky, Miami (OH), and Evansville. Southern Indiana is led by head coach Jeffery Aucoin, who is entering into his third season with the Eagles. Prior to Southern Indiana, Aucoin spent 10 years with Harvard University as an assistant coach. His key contributors include Ashby Willis, Aysa Thomas, and Audrey Small. Willis leads the team in kills with 181. Thomas, the previous OVC Setter of the Week, has produced 411 assists. Small rounds out the top players with 188 digs.
All-Time Series: The all-time series between these two programs is 4-2, favoring the Panthers. Last year, the Eagles swept Eastern Illinois 3-0. However, in 2023, EIU came out on top, winning both matches.
