The 2026 season opener for Eastern Illinois football is still six weeks away, but this week the Ohio Valley Conference is releasing its preseason football honors leading into the 2026 OVC Football Media Day presented by Shaw Sports Turf which takes place on Friday in Nashville.

On Wednesday, the league released its preseason defensive players and return specialists to watch from each team with five Panthers listed.  Aidan Archibald, Ja'Wuan Nickson, Saipeti Maiava, Jacarre Fleming-Page and Devin Whitlock were all honored on the preseason list.

The league released its offensive preseason players to watch on Tuesday with the predicted order of finish for this year's football season coming on Thursday leading into Friday's event.

EIU opens the 2026 season on Thursday, August 27 at Murray State.  The home opener is Saturday, September 12 against Indiana State.  Sesaon tickets are available online at www.EIUPanthers.com or by calling 217-581-2106.

Archibald came off the bench last season in all 12 games as a reserve defensive lineman and was listed on the OVC preseason list.  He finished the season with eight tackles including a half tackle for loss.

Nickson was a second team All-OVC linebacker last season and landed on the preseason list at that position for the 2026 season.  He was second on the Panthers team with 95 tackles, a total that ranked fourth in the conference.  He registered a team high 8.5 tackles for loss with two forced fumbles.

Maiava ranked third on the team in tackles last year at the safety position appearing in 11 games as he was a preseason player to watch at defensive back. Maiava finished the season with 60 tackles.  He added 1.5 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.

Fleming-Page was selected as a preseason player to watch at kick returner.  The sophomore averaged 17.4 yards per return last year as a true freshman while rushing for 212 yards as a back-up running back.

Whitlock joined the Panthers program this summer as a transfer from Indiana University (Pa.) after starting his career at the University of Pittsburgh.  He was named a preseason player to watch at punt returner.  As a wide receiver last year, he was a first team All-PSAC West selection.
