Panthers Fall Short On EKU Bank Shot

Martin scores career high 28 in loss

HTML Box  |  PDF Box Ky. – For the second straight time in Ohio Valley Conference play an opponent hit a shot with time running down to beat Eastern Illinois (1-9, 0-3 OVC).  This time it was Eastern Kentucky as the Colonels improved to 5-5, 2-0 OVC with the 72-69 win.

RICHMOND,

 

Trailing 69-64 with just over two minutes remaining, Eastern Illinois climbed back into the contest as Romain Martin knocked down a 3-pointer and Bobby Catchings banked home a 12-footer.

 

With 10 seconds left in the game Eastern Kentucky's Darnell Dialls banked home a 3-pointer to give the Colonels the final margin of victory.  Dialls had 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

 

EIU had a chance to tie the game but Mike Rose blocked a Martin 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to preserve the win.  Martin finished with  a career-high 28 points hitting 11-of-17 from the floor and 6-of-9 from 3-point range.

 

Both teams followed a hot hand in the first half as EIU's Martin and EKU's Rose each finished with 15 points.  Rose hit a fade away jumper at the buzzer to give the Colonels a 33-29 lead. 

 

Catchings added 13 points scoring 11 in the second half and six down the stretch.  Catchings also had 7 rebounds.  Ousmane Cisse added 9 points, 7 points and 4 rebounds.

 

Rose had 25 points for EKU while Adam Leonard added 10. 

 

The Panthers finish this two game road trip on Wednesday at Morehead State with a 6:30 p.m. start.
