CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay (10-6, 6-0 OVC) shot 52 percent from 3-point range on Monday night during a 73-57 win over Eastern Illinois (2-13-, 1-6 OVC).
Eastern Illinois opened with a solid start taking advantage of four early Austin Peay turnovers as the Panthers built an early 7-2 lead. Julio Anthony hit one of his two first half 3-pointers to open that run as he had eight first half points for EIU.
Austin Peay responded with a 12-0 run as Todd Babington canned two 3-pointers during the run as he was one of two Governors with 9 points. A Kyle Duncan 3-pointer with 6:58 gave APSU its first double digit lead at 25-13.
EIU trimmed the lead back to single digits two more times in the first twenty minutes but Caleb Brown hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in the half and Derek Wright converted a jumper with eight seconds left to give APSU the 38-24 halftime lead.
The Panthers scored the first points of the second half but were never able to get closer than 15 points in the second half the final time on a Tyler Laser 3-pointer with 8:14 left that cut the Governors lead to 56-41. EIU did shoot 56 percent from outside but several of those came in the final minutes. Anthony led EIU with 17 points hitting 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
Drake Reed was the Governors leading scorer with 14 points hitting 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Brown added 12 for APSU.
Eastern Illinois returns to action on Thursday with a home game against Tennessee Martin which is led by the nation's second leading scorer Lester Hudson. The Panthers played their second straight game without leading scorer Romain Martin who has an inflamed tendon. He is expected to return against the Skyhawks.
